Fazzoletto—The Handkerchief
An Art Campaign by Michaela Cerullo and Roberto de Luca
This art event draws attention to the symbolism of an
everyday object: the handkerchief. The ‘hanky’ dries tears,
bestows comfort and records the traces of human joy and
sorrow. The offer of a handkerchief to someone is a gesture of
caring and compassion.
Art Installation
The artists have chosen the handkerchief for their installation
as a symbol of something quick and fleeting. The
handkerchiefs will portray written words, drawings and/or
markings that participants create to recall and record the
people, places, countries, stories, cultures, images, wishes or
worries of their lives. The installation of connected
handkerchiefs will carry these personal, individual messages
out into the world.
Background
With the creation of this installation, the artists intend to
contribute a poetic statement to the ongoing debate on refugee
movement and migration politics. The destinies of refugees
are largely unknown to most of us in Europe. They appear in
the media as large groups of people, and they receive our
attention, perhaps even our sympathy, for the duration of the
news report, only to be replaced by the next news issue. They
then disappear from our thoughts without a trace, literally and
figuratively. They become blank pages, just like the White Fazzoletti.
Venue
In 1814 Marquard Wocher created a panoramic painting of the
city of Thun. The painting provides a glimpse of the everyday
life of the city and its surrounding countryside, including a
panoramic depiction of the Bernese Oberland Alps. This
combination of close observation with far-sighted vision
inspired the artists to choose the Thun Panorama as the
location of the Fazzoletti installation.
Participation
The project begins on March 13 at the Thun Panorama and is
part of an intercultural Women’s Day event produced in
collaboration with ProjekteNetzwerk Thun, a non-profit
organization for intercultural projects, and the Art Museum of
Thun. The final art installation will take place in September
2016. Everyone is welcome to participate as follows.
• Send your finished handkerchief (white cloth, when
possible created with water-resistant materials) to
Michaela Cerullo, Uttigenstrasse 27, 3600 Thun
• Post a photo of your handkerchief on Facebook via Instagram or Twitter
• Join a Fazzoletti-Workshop beginning in March 2016
at the Kunstküche, Kunstmuseum Thun.
